Teeth whitening: understand your options
Whitening changes the colour of natural teeth. Start with a dental assessment and discuss the outcome you hope to achieve.
Dentist-supervised whitening
A dentist may provide custom trays and gel for use at home, or offer a treatment in the surgery. The right approach depends on your teeth, gums and personal circumstances.
Shop-bought products
Products sold for home use are not the same as a dentist-prescribed treatment. Check ingredients, instructions and limitations, and ask your dentist before using a whitening kit.
Suitability matters
Whitening can cause sensitivity and gum irritation. It does not change the colour of crowns, dentures or implants. The NHS advises against whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding and does not offer cosmetic whitening on the NHS.
